On Friday, March 21, students from the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences and the College of Business at 草榴社区 (UAH) had the unique opportunity to connect with industry professionals and community leaders at an event hosted by the Huntsville/Madison County Chamber of Commerce. The event provided valuable insights into career readiness, networking, and the vibrant culture of Huntsville.

A Day of Learning and Networking

The day began with a check-in at the Chamber of Commerce, setting the stage for an informative and engaging experience. Students were welcomed with an overview of Huntsville's economic landscape, presented by Annie Davis from the Economic Development Department. Her insights into the city's growth and opportunities provided a strong foundation for the day's discussions.

Career Readiness Panel

One of the highlights of the event was the Career Readiness Panel, where students heard from a diverse group of professionals:

Laura Taylor, Recruiter at Integration Innovation, Inc. (i3)

Matt Mandrella, Music Officer for the City of Huntsville

Sarah Macaluso, Vice President of Client Experience and Strategy at Red Sage Communications

Akshay Ahuja, STEM Development and Engagement Program Manager at the FBI鈥檚 Operational Technology Division

McKala Troxler, Bishop Brooks Law Office

Panelists shared their career journeys, industry trends, and advice on securing employment and professional development. Students actively engaged with thought-provoking questions, gaining a clearer perspective on potential career paths.

Networking Lunch

Following a short break, students participated in a networking lunch with keynote speaker Jillian Miles Massey from Horizon Point Consulting. Her presentation on effective networking strategies provided practical tips on building professional relationships and leveraging connections in Huntsville鈥檚 dynamic job market.

Exploring Huntsville Through Walking Roundtables

In the afternoon, students explored the "Live. Work. Play" aspects of Huntsville through interactive walking roundtables. Industry experts led discussions at various downtown locations:

Stephanie Mell, Church Street Family Owner (Sea Salt Location)

Rob Buddo, Downtown Huntsville Incorporated (Downtown Huntsville Location)

Amy Jones, Arts Huntsville (City Hall Location)

Marie Bostick, Land Trust (Big Spring Park Location near AL.com building)

These small-group sessions allowed students to learn firsthand about Huntsville鈥檚 thriving business scene, cultural initiatives, and community-driven projects.

Wrapping Up the Experience

The day concluded with a debrief session back at the Chamber, where students reflected on their experiences and key takeaways. Discussions centered on new professional connections, career insights, and the overall impact of the event.

This immersive experience reinforced the importance of networking, professional development, and staying informed about local industry trends. Thanks to the Huntsville Chamber of Commerce and the participating professionals, students left with a greater understanding of the opportunities available in Huntsville and beyond.

鈥淚t was a fun and interesting experience where I got to hear from career fields that I am actually interested in. I also got to collaborate with likeminded peers with experiences that resemble mine all while learning more about what happens in Huntsville. It was especially interesting to learn about things that I was unaware of as a Huntsville native.鈥 -Alexis Underwood

"This was one of my favorite events of the semester! Not only did I have a chance to network with professionals from around Huntsville, but I also met new people from UAH and learned a lot about downtown Huntsville. I loved taking part in the Huntsville showcase and would 100% do it again!" - Lexie Harris

Rachel Carlisle, Lecturer in Art History at 草榴社区 (UAH), has recently published a new book titled Picturing German Antiquity in the Age of Print: Art, Archaeology, and the Style All鈥檃ntica in Early Modern Augsburg with Amsterdam University Press. This scholarly work explores the pivotal role of print in local antiquarian studies and the development of a style all鈥檃ntica in sixteenth-century Augsburg, Germany.

Carlisle鈥檚 research delves into how print culture influenced the understanding and representation of antiquity in early modern Germany. By examining artistic and archaeological endeavors, she sheds light on how Augsburg became a hub for the revival and reinterpretation of classical forms. Her analysis provides fresh insights into the intersection of art, archaeology, and print media during this transformative period.

Several prestigious fellowships, including the Lindsay Young Visiting Regional Faculty Fellowship at the Marco Institute for Medieval and Renaissance Studies at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, a Fulbright Research Award, and the Rolf und Ursula Schneider-Stiftung Doctoral Fellowship at the Herzog August Bibliothek supported the research for this publication. Additionally, publication subventions from the Renaissance Society of America and the New Foundation of Art History contributed to bringing this book to fruition.
