The Collaborative Learning Center at 草榴社区 (UAH) is pleased to present 鈥淎ll Skate: Active learning in the University Classroom,鈥 a teaching workshop led by Derek Bruff, director of the Vanderbilt University Center for Teaching and a senior lecturer in the Vanderbilt Department of Mathematics. The workshop will take place in Tech Hall, room S105, at 1 p.m. on Friday, March 31.
鈥淒r. Bruff鈥檚 lecture is an excellent opportunity to learn more about active and collaborative learning,鈥 says Dr. Dan Rochowiak, associate professor of computer science and director of UAH鈥檚 Collaborative Learning Center. 鈥淔rom chairs with wheels to response systems and beyond, Dr. Bruff presents technologies and their role in active learning with clarity and insight.鈥
An experienced public speaker and the author of both a book and a blog about educational development, Bruff is a vocal proponent of agile learning instruction. 鈥淎ll Skate鈥 takes a closer look at this concept within the context of educational technology, learning communities, and practice and feedback. As Bruff explains, 鈥渁ctivities in which every student is invited and encouraged to be actively involved 鈥 like 鈥渁ll skate鈥 times at the roller rink 鈥 are a more powerful form of active learning instruction than the less formal Q&A periods that can be built into a lecture.鈥
