On May 7, 2025 the M. Louis Salmon Library activated the new EZProxy server hosted directly by . This change will be very beneficial to not only the M. Louis Salmon Library but to the entire University of Alabama in Huntsville community. This new proxy server:

• Improves ease of maintenance and enhances up-time;
• Improves access to online materials and ensures the library’s large collection of online materials remains just a few clicks away;
• Helps the library collection to stay more responsive to rapid changes in security and privacy. 

For those accessing the M. Louis Salmon Library’s materials through the or through the there will be virtually no change for the end user. The necessary information and redirects have already been loaded. 

However, those who have persistent links (also called permanent links) or bookmarks to the old materials might have to update their links to keep them valid going forward depending on if those links directly included or encoded the old proxy server’s information into the link.. 

THINGS TO LOOK FOR

The old proxy links were of the elib.uah.edu formation. Examples might include

• https://www.jstor.org.elib.uah.edu/stable/20441734
• https://elib.uah.edu/login?url=https://www.jstor.org/stable/20441734

Those links need to be updated to the new proxy server address: uah.idm.oclc.org. 

• https://www.jstor.org.uah.idm.oclc.org/stable/20441734
• https://uah.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://www.jstor.org/stable/20441734

Any old link using elib.uah.edu will need to be updated. 

THINGS WHICH MIGHT BE IMPACTED

The following items might include links to the old proxy server:

• Bookmarks stored on your browser(s) or any sort of link aggregator or bookmark manager.
• Handouts including direct links to library resources.
• Syllabi and other Canvas course materials that had direct links to library resources.
• Descriptions in videos recorded and posted for classes if those included links to the library's subscription services. 
• Online pages that had links to resources. 
• Articles, Conference Papers, Dissertations, and Theses that had URLs included for the articles cited. 
• Citation Managers and similar tools that allowed proxy server information to be included in their settings or were stored in the files. 

Other online and print resources might also have the proxy server stored, depending on how extensively you used proxied resources and included the whole link. 

THINGS NOT IMPACTED

Note that not all links had the proxy embedded. Some of the library’s online resources do not include the proxy server in their URL. For example, the above linked article, if accessed through Primo Pathfinder (the library’s discovery service and default search) has this link:

Since that does not include the “elib.uah.edu,” it will remain fully functional as is. 

Other things not impacted include:

• Open-Access materials that do not require the proxy server.
• Links to public resources such as .gov websites that do not require proxied access.
• Other "open web" resources (newspapers, archives, and other materials) that do not require subscription.
• DOIs that were not edited to include the elib.uah.edu. Note, if the DOI was edited to include the old proxy server, it will need to be updated.
• Other methods of accessing the files such as full citations that did not include the link to the proxy server in the citation.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can I continue to use the old proxy server? 

No. While the M. Louis Salmon Library is working with OIT to allow a bit of a grace period to redirect old links, it is a temporary measure to continue some access but over the next few months this will cease and links not updated to the new proxy server address will no longer work.

If I have previously used the old proxy server, will it interfere with the new one?

It should not. While they are virtually identical experiences for the end user and based on the same technology and settings, they are two different servers so your browser and the vendors should see them as completely separate entities. 

What do I do if I have issues with the new proxy server?

Reach out to refdesk@uah.edu and let the library know.

˛ÝÁńÉçÇř (UAH) welcomed local second-graders for the inaugural “Hop into Learning: A Bunny Discovery Educational Day” on April 25. College of Education students played an active role during the event.

There were bunny ears, storybooks and lots of giggles as ˛ÝÁńÉçÇř (UAH) welcomed a very special group of guests—local second-graders—for the first-ever “Hop into Learning: A Bunny Discovery Educational Day” on April 25. UAH is a part of The University of Alabama System.

Hosted at the UAH Salmon Library and led by a team of UAH faculty, staff and students, this educational initiative provided a magical mix of bunny-themed literature and interactive, standards-based learning activities, all aimed at nurturing a love of reading among young students. It was created by Dr. Hamsa Mahafza, Clinical Assistant Professor of Curriculum and Instruction at UAH. Inspired by her love for bunnies and passion for writing children’s books, Dr. Mahafza developed the concept as part of the College of Education’s “Reading for Pleasure” initiative—a program focused on sparking curiosity, encouraging creativity, and cultivating lifelong reading habits.

“Reading is such a powerful thing, and when children learn to read for fun – not just as part of a school assignment – it encourages lifelong reading habits” said Dr. Mahafza. “We wanted to create a day that helps children fall in love with books, using something as simple and adorable as a bunny to provide a meaningful context and a joyful reading experience.”

The event enhanced community engagement, with one of the most popular stations showcasing live rabbits from , a local rabbit rescue organization. Students met different breeds, learned about rabbit care, and took photos—fostering empathy and curiosity through hands-on learning. UAH’s mascot, Charger Blue, also made a special appearance, cheering on participants and adding excitement to the day.

Each interactive station encouraged storytelling, creativity and critical thinking while also serving as a professional development opportunity for UAH College of Education students, who facilitated the activities and gained valuable teaching experience in a real-world setting.

As a keepsake, each child received a bunny-themed coloring book titled “Let’s Hop into Learning,” authored by Dr. Mahafza, sponsored by the UAH Library and designed by UAH’s Office of Marketing and Communications. The book symbolized the event’s collaborative spirit and gave students a tangible reminder of their day.

“Research shows that reading for pleasure significantly contributes to children’s cognitive, emotional, and social development,” said Dr. Mahafza. “It promotes motivation, supports literacy growth and encourages a lifelong appreciation for reading among emergent readers.”

With this in mind, the “Hop into Learning” initiative is set to become a spring tradition at UAH, continuing to blend literacy, creativity, and a little bunny magic for years to come.

Every year, the Salmon Library hosts various studies and projects to insure its library website is staying relative and useful for our patrons in the UAH Community. The Library will be launching the first 2025 study this April and needs students, faculty, and staff to volunteer. Each session will take around 30-45 minutes. 

Feedback from this study is valuable for influencing the future of the website and access to large number of resources and services the Library has for its community.

The study requires no previous experience with web- or user-design.

There will be a thank you gift for all participants. Snacks, classic library shirts, and other library-themed swag will be up for grabs.

This week's event is a Katakana Workshop. Join the Salmon Library to learn an introduction on how to read and write katakana. Katakana is a Japanese phonetic alphabet used for loan words from other languages, onomatopoeia, and common Japanese names for plants and animals. Learn how to read and write your name, the titles of some of your favorite animes, and sound effects in manga!

Prior to that, on March 27 (2:30pm to 4pm) will be the second part of the MultiMaker Lab's Podcasting 101 series. This second entry, Edit and Produce, focuses on recording and editing a podcast and will feature Adobe Audition. No prior experience is required. Again, this is open to all students and is completely free.

Events this Week

It will be a busy week at the Salmon Library. Starting on Tuesday, February 11 (2pm to 4pm) is Hand Sewing Accessories in LIB 111 on the first floor. Learn the basics of sewing your own accessories by hand! Free to all UAH Students. Space/Supplies might be limited.

Then, later this week, there will be Editing Out the Chaos. The second part of the "Making Movies" special series for Makers Thursdays. This event will be on Thursday, February 13 from 2:30pm to 4:00pm in the MultiMaker Lab, LIB 115. It will feature Adobe Premiere Pro. 

On February 13, the library has its first of a pair of odd-couple Valentine's Events. Two-Minute Tarot is a quick for fun fortune telling experience where you can get your tarot reading in two minutes or less. Non-romantic readings are also available. This will be from 1pm to 3pm. Swing by the Lobby to sign up.

Then, on Valentine's Day itself the library is having the Anti-Valetine's Tea and Craft. The perfect event for those people who just want to drink tea and make fun crafts in silence. This will be on Friday, February 14, from 2pm to 4pm. Also in the Lobby.

Celebrating the Year of the Snake will be on Sunday, February 16 (4pm to 6pm) in LIB 126 (the Library Commons). It will be a celebration of the new year with free food - longevity noodles, veg options available - free snacks, and free crafts. Open to all ˛ÝÁńÉçÇřs and completely free while supplies last. 

Cafe de la UAH's Vinay Salikineedi Creates Robotic Barista

After Vinay Salikineedi opened Cafe de la UAH he realized that good customer service while also making good coffee had some challenges, so he came up with a novel solution with his roommate: a robotic barista that could handle the coffee craft while the person handles the customer service. 

"For the baristas who are working making coffee and also providing a good customer service was kind of a little bit harder and I didn’t like for it to push them to throw away good customer service and push their limits to make good coffee," .

The library's Charger Trivia Challenge returns. This time it will be about the Super Bowl, but with a twist! 

The Super Bowl Pop Culture Trivia will be about all the things around the Superbowl - the celebrities, the commercials, the half-time shows, and the science - but not about the sport itself. Perfect for those who want a different take on the big event. It will be on Tuesday, February 4. From 6pm to 8pm. In LIB 111. There will be snacks. Compete invidually or in teams up to 5.

For a different sort of kick off, the Salmon Library's MultiMaker Lab is starting a new mini-series of Makers Thursdays to talk about making video projects. The first will be this Thursday, February 6, from 2:30 to 4pm. Filming 101 will look at the all important first step of getting a project set up and recorded. Later workshops will look at editing and adding in special effects. You do not have to attend all three. You can mix and match as you need.
