Dr. Larry Carey, an associate professor of atmospheric science and until recently the chair of UAH鈥檚 Atmospheric Science Department, was honored in April for his work mentoring graduate students. The award was presented during the university鈥檚 annual awards day ceremony.
鈥淢entoring graduate students on research, academic life, professional development and career considerations is the most rewarding 鈥榳ork鈥 I do as faculty at UAH,鈥 Carey said recently. 鈥淚t has been my great pleasure to collaborate with so many talented and dedicated graduate students, and to watch them grow and reach their academic, personal and professional goals.
鈥淚t is definitely one part of my job that I still look forward to each and every day.鈥
Carey recently completed a five-year term as department chair (including one year as interim chair) and is setting up shop in the Severe Weather Institute, Radar and Lightning Laboratories (SWIRLL), where he looks forward to focusing on teaching and research in radar and lightning meteorology.
Carey joined the UAH research staff in 2007 and the atmospheric science faculty in 2012. He earned his Ph.D. and M.S. in atmospheric science from Colorado State University, a B.S. in meteorology at Penn State and a B.S. in electrical engineering at Boston University.
